Our mineralization process converts steel slag and captured CO₂ into PCC and a low-carbon cement binder — in a single integrated pathway.

HOW IT WORKS

Steel slag is rich in calcium. Our process extracts that calcium and lets captured CO₂ lock onto it, forming stable calcium carbonate — the mineral PCC. What remains becomes a low-carbon binder that replaces part of cement.

High-grade PCC

A high-purity mineral used in applications such as paper, paints and coatings, plastics, construction materials, and other industrial products.

SCM binder

A supplementary cementitious material designed for use in lower-carbon cement, concrete, mortars, and other binder applications.

RESEARCH BASE

LithoBind builds on more than 10 years of research at Aalto University, including earlier work on producing precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) from steel slag and other calcium-rich industrial residues. By combining this foundation with Aalto University's latest research in mineral-based materials and alternative binders, the team identified a way to turn industrial steel residue into two valuable end-products: high-grade PCC and a supplementary cementitious material (SCM).

Today, the technology is being validated and prepared for industrial use with the support of Business Finland and Aalto University — taking the process from the laboratory toward its first demonstration plant.
